Trisuit Maintenance: The Complete Guide to Extend Its Lifespan

The trisuit is much more than just a sports garment: it is a key piece of equipment for the triathlete, designed to chain together swimming, cycling, and running without compromising comfort or performance. Yet, many triathletes neglect its maintenance, which can quickly damage the fabrics, seams, and technical properties.

Properly maintaining your trisuit means preserving its breathability, its elasticity, its comfort… and avoiding having to buy a new one too soon. Here is the complete guide to taking care of your trisuit, whether you are a beginner or an experienced triathlete.

I - Why Trisuit Maintenance is Essential in Triathlon

Between salt or chlorinated water, sweat, sun, bike friction, and quick transitions, a trisuit is put to the test.

Poor maintenance can lead to:

  • a loss of elasticity
  • persistent bad odors
  • irritations during the race
  • premature wear of seams and chamois leather

Conversely, regular maintenance helps preserve the technical performance of your trisuit in the long term, even for demanding formats like the Half Ironman or Ironman.

II - When and How to Clean Your Trisuit?

After each training or competition

The rule is simple: never leave a dirty trisuit to dry in a sports bag. This promotes bacteria, odors, and damages the fibers.

As soon as possible:

  • rinse it with clear water
  • or wash it quickly

Even after a short session, salt, sweat, and chlorine must be removed.

III - Machine Washing: Best Practices

Machine washing is possible, provided some essential rules are followed.

Temperature and program

  • Wash at maximum 30°C
  • Delicate or sports program
  • Gentle spin (max 800 rpm)

Suitable detergent

  • Use a mild detergent
  • ❌ No fabric softener (it clogs breathable fibers)
  • ❌ No bleach or harsh products

Little tip

Wash your trisuit in a laundry bag to protect the seams and chamois skin.

IV - Drying: A Crucial Step

Drying is often the most common mistake.

To do

  • Drying in the open air
  • In the shade, in a ventilated place
  • Flat or hung without clips on sensitive areas

To absolutely avoid

  • ❌ Tumble dryer
  • ❌ Radiator
  • ❌ Direct sunlight

Heat damages elastane and significantly reduces the lifespan of the trisuit.

V - Should You Hand Wash Your Trisuit?

Hand washing is ideal if:

  • the trisuit is very dirty (salt water, sand)
  • it is very technical or customized
  • you want to maximize its longevity

Lukewarm water + mild soap, without excessive rubbing, especially on the chamois skin area.

VI - Care for the Sensitive Areas of the Trisuit

The pad (chamois leather)

  • Rinse carefully after each use
  • Press water out well (without twisting)
  • Check that it dries completely

Seams and closures

  • Close zippers before washing
  • Avoid rubbing against Velcro or accessories

VII - Storage: Don’t Neglect After-Drying

Proper storage extends lifespan:

  • Clean and dry trisuit only
  • Dry, ventilated place, away from light
  • Avoid leaving it compressed too long in a bag

Common Mistakes to Absolutely Avoid

❌ Leaving your trisuit damp in a bag
❌ Using fabric softener
❌ Washing it with clothes that have Velcro
❌ Drying it in the sun or in the dryer
❌ Waiting several sessions before washing

Taking care of your trisuit is not a constraint, it’s a triathlete’s reflex. A few simple steps after each session help preserve the comfort, performance, and durability of your equipment.
